As told by Laura Ramos, Vice President, Principal Analyst at Forrester during the latest episode of The Event Marketing Show

Laura says that in-person events will likely see “a shift to more intimate settings.” Even then, unique value needs to be created. Otherwise, you are just some person building a baseball field in the middle of nowhere.

No-shows are certainly a concern. Laura offered the following advice:

  1. For the virtual side of the event, anything “free” is guaranteed to generate high no-show rates. Attendees need to have some skin in the game.
  2. Increase marketing and contact before the event to restate the value of attending the in-person side of the event.
  3. Create a unique experience for those attending in-person that cannot be replicated online. A dinner, or another networking event, can be a driving force for business.

Laura’s third point, in our opinion, is absolutely critical to in-person event success moving forward. Put yourself in your attendees’ shoes for a moment.

If you were guaranteed a captive audience or a memorable event, would you be more inclined to show up? In sales, the ability to get face time with your prospects and customers is worth its weight in gold.

In the end, Kevin Costner builds the field and, as the credits roll, you see a field of cars in line to get access to this unique event. The same can be true of yours, even if it’s online.
